Cross-border Child Protection

A minimum of 600 Cambodian children are regularly engaged in hazardous work in and around the enormous border market in Aranyaprathet, Thailand, across the border from the Cambodian city of Poipet. The children cross the border illegally each day and are at constant risk of trafficking, abuse, exploitation and conflict with the law. Many of them are unable to go to school as their families depend on the daily income they make.

Friends-International operates a cross-border response program in Poipet and Aranyaprathet with the objective of protecting children engaged in labour in Thailand, reintegrate them to public school and prevent more children from being pushed into harmful situations. This is done through a Drop-in Centre at the market, support to families so they are better able to care for their children and a proactive ChildSafe protection Network operating on both sides of the border.
