Kaliyan Mith

Although the city of Siem Reap has developed a lot in the last 10 years, the development has not benefited everyone. Children from the most vulnerable communities often do not reach further than grade 3 at primary school and start working at a very young age.

Siem Reap is the most popular tourist town in Cambodia, thanks to its proximity to the Angkor Temples. Kaliyan Mith, the Friends Program in Siem Reap provides a comprehensive range of services for vulnerable children, youth and their families. A committed team of 62 people work with an average 530 children and youth every day.

Kaliyan Mith activities include:

  • providing basic services to children and youth living or working on the streets
  • providing a safe place for children and young people during the day where they can play, rest, see a doctor or a social worker
  • Providing education and training opportunities
  • Providing support for families to improve their income through the Home Based Production project
  • developing a community wide child protection network through the ChildSafe initiative.

The Kaliyan Mith team also works with children and young people who are in Siem Reap prison. These children are provided with non-formal education, basic health care (in collaboration with the prison doctors), life skills and recreational activities. The team also works with the children and the prison authorities to prepare the children’s return into society once they are released. See drawings from children in prison in our gallery.

Kaliyan Mith activities include direct services to the children/youth as well as working with key government personnel to build their capacity in delivering essential services to the community.
