CAMBODIA

Cambodia continues to develop after many years of conflict and has become a popular tourist destination for travelers from all over the world. Unfortunately the rapid pace of development and increase in tourism has not benefited everyone and has led to some negative outcomes, particularly for vulnerable children and youth.

Friends-International has programs in Cambodia to address these issues:

Mith Samlanh in Phnom Penh: works with over 19 000 children and youth every year through a holistic program addressing the whole range of issues these children and families are facing.

Kaliyan Mith in Siem Reap: works with over 1400 street children and youth in and around the Angkor Temple area, as well as those who are at risk of coming to the streets, in prison, or who work at the garbage dump site.

Drug Program: a best practice holistic program aimed at children and youth including prevention, harm reduction, detoxification and rehabilitation. This project is now being replicated within partner organizations.

The ChildSafe Network: is building a network of protection of children with strategic members of society. ChildSafe Cambodia has trained and certified over 1500 members, including moto-taxi drivers, tuk-tuk drivers, hotels/guest-houses, restaurants, internet cafés, teachers, chiefs of villages, police and more.

Migration Program: responding to the increasing number of children and young people migrating within Cambodia and to neighboring countries by providing information about migration and options, supporting migrants during their travels and at places of arrival to reduce dangers of abuse and supporting their integration or return to their home countries.

CYTI Alliance: building a network of NGO and Government partners aiming at developing best practice models and services that effectively respond to the needs of marginalized children and youth.

Friends Social Businesses: Training vulnerable families to earn an income to support themselves, while at ensuring the sustainability of Friends-International programs by developing a range of income generating businesses.
