Volunteering conditions

Candidates to volunteer positions must provide:

Candidates must have a specialty that will be useful to staff and the work of Mith Samlanh

Mith Samlanh is not a training organization and, therefore, cannot accept students who need to gain field experience unless they can bring a specific skill to the teams or can carry out a specific duty that is useful to the organization in accordance with article 4.

Candidates will always work with staff (not with the children directly) to provide specific training, or will carry out a specific duty that will reduce the workload of the staff in administrative capacities (research, reports, presentations…)

No project is to disturb and interfere in the education/training curriculum of the children and must adapt to the Mith Samlanh lesson plans and time-tables

Volunteers must present an application with an outline of a project that must take into consideration points 2-3-4-5 and must include a tentative budget. All proposed projects will be examined by Mith Samlanh management and any proposition that does not fit Mith Samlanh needs will be turned down. Alternative project proposal can be designed by the Mith Samlanh and submitted to the prospective volunteer.

All candidates that are approved will sign a contract and a job description based on the project proposal with Friends-International and Mith Samlanh. The contract will be time-bound with expected results clearly identified. Maximum length of contract is 3 months, but can be renewed.

The volunteers will be directly supervised by and will be responsible to Friends-International. At Mith Samlanh, a specific Team Leader will be appointed to be in charge of each volunteer, under the direct monitoring of the Director.

All volunteers will undergo an orientation visit and basic training on Mith Samlanh and street children before starting their work, whatever the duration of their volunteering time.

Volunteers must work exclusively on the project assigned to him/her. Any change must be first approved by the Team Leader, the Director and Friends-International.

Progress of the volunteer’s work will be monitored by the Team Leader in charge and reported to the Director and Friends-International.

Upon completion of work, all reports, papers, etc. produced by the volunteer, remain the property of Mith Samlanh and/or Friends-International. An intellectual property clause in the contract clarifies the use of material / work by the volunteer. Any abuse can lead to legal prosecution.

A letter of recommendation is issued based on the outcome of the volunteer’s work.

Chef /Trainer -Volunteer position
Friends-International is looking for an experienced volunteer to work as a Chef/Trainer. The volunteer will be working with Friends-International in Phnom Penh for a minimum period of 6 to 12 months.
JOB TITLE: Chef/Trainer (Kitchen), Friends -International
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Hospitality Business Coordinator
POSITION SUMMARY: The Chef/Trainer is responsible for the following: Daily oversight of all kitchen operations; training, teaching, and supervising staff and students; ensuring all staff and students follow proper rules of dress, hygiene and conduct in the kitchen; ensuring quality, consistency, and timeliness of all food and beverages preparation and service in the dining room and catering; purchasing, receiving, storing, and monitoring food supplies; ensuring cleanliness of the kitchens, tools and equipment and food supplies; updating the menu seasonally; scheduling staff, students, and duties; assisting Head Teacher with management of the restaurant. Other duties may also be assigned as necessary.
TASKS AND COMPENTENCIES: Tasks required of a successful candidate in this role are as follows:
Duties:
- Kitchen Operations:
- Tasks: Oversee all meal preparation to ensure quality, consistency, and timeliness; monitor, request, receive, and properly store food supplies; ensure cleanliness of kitchens, food, tools, and wares; ensure safety of staff and students; update menu as required.
- Competencies: Ability prepare Asian and Western meals; ability to successfully manage a staff of adults; ability to teach students kitchen skills; ability to constantly monitor food supplies.
- Personnel Management:
- Tasks: Train, teach, and supervise teachers and students in all aspects of working in restaurant kitchens; assisting with scheduling; assigning duties to kitchen staff and students; ensuring staff and students are present, properly dressed, groomed, and act professionally.
- o Competencies: Ability to effectively manage staff of both adults and young adults
- Budget/Purchasing:
- Tasks: Identify and requisition food supplies needed to keep the kitchen properly stocked; assist Head Teacher with preparing kitchen budget; monitoring budget versus expenses throughout the year.
Requirements:
- PREREQUISITES: Minimum of 3 years previous restaurant experience as chef /cook with ability to prepare both Asian and Western dishes required. Experience supervising and/or training adults and young adults. Good communication skills with children and young people. Availability to work nights and weekends. Ability to work quickly and independently. Ability to speak English and Khmer is an advantage.

Special Event Coordinator
Friends International (FI) is a social enterprise that works with marginalized urban children and youth, their families, their communities and societies to build better futures for them. Friends-International is seeking a qualified volunteer to fill the position of Special Event Coordinator (15 Year Anniversary).
The successful applicant will work closely with the Executive Director, the International Communications Coordinator, Program Directors and Support Offices to plan, coordinate and organize events relating to Friends-International’s 15 year anniversary in 2009-2010.
Main Responsibilities
The Sepcial Event Coordinator will:
- Organise events relating to the 15 year anniversary of Friends-International
- Support teams and Support Offices to organise events
- Maximise fundraising opportunities
- Prepare material and information for the anniversary
- Support Mith Samlanh’s Land Campaign fundraising efforts through 15 year activities
- Identify supporters (personal and corporate)
- Work with the Communications team to promote the event in the media
Experiences and qualifications
- Experience in event management
- Fundraising experience
- Experience in working with media, preparing information for media
- Ability to use Databases
- Strong communication skills in English is essential. French and other languages are beneficial.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to maintain a good network of partners
- Experience working for an international organization
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to prioritize and work to tight deadlines

Location: This position is based in Phnom Penh and will require regular national and international travels
Duration:Full-time work. Part time may be available upon negotiation. The position is for a period of one year.
