MIGRATION/MOBILITY
Friends-International’s Mobility project is designed to prevent unsafe migration, protect vulnerable migrants, reintegrate migrants and to promote migrant’s rights.
In South East Asia, many young people leave provincial areas to find employment in bigger cities or in other countries. When arriving at their destination without knowing anyone or having a place to go they are very high risk of abuse, exploitation, unsafe labor or ending up on the street.
The Mobility project addresses domestic and international mobility of young people and their families, at departure, transit and arrival points of main migration routes in Thailand and Cambodia by providing:
- Prevention: to inform young people, their families and communities of the risks of migration, about alternatives to migrating and provide them with information on how to protect themselves if migrating.
- Protection: in collaboration with Childsafe, to engage community members to protect young people and their families by providing training on how to identify young migrants and to provide information and support.
- Reintegration: to provide counseling to develop a future plan, help them to return home, or to stabilize at destination
In Cambodia, in 2008, 1933 young people received information on the risks of migration, and 164 young migrants were supported to return home, join vocational training, or find employment at destination
